Diversity in Organization
Gems of the Office
Happy day, amazing people!!!
We need different gems to make a beautiful jewelry likewise we need different people to run an organization seamlessly.
Diversity is of two types
Surface Level Diversity | Deep Level Diversity |
Age, Race, Gender, Ethnicity, Education and Disability status | Personality and Values Example: Extrovert & Introvert; Plan oriented & spontaneous oriented |
Over the time surface level diversity wither away but only deep level diversity creates discomfort. Hence employers must be careful in recruiting.
Discrimination
When there is diversity, chances are there for discrimination too.
Discrimination means to note a difference between things. It can be for
- For good purpose: Employment reservations for disabled or
- For bad purpose: Mockery and negative stereotypes
People are generally discriminated based on biographical characteristics.
Biographical Characteristics | Examples |
Age | Old employee’s productivity decline with age |
Sex | Women can’t work in a traditional male domain |
Race & Ethnicity | Favoring colleagues of their own race in performance evaluation |
Physical disability | Encounter lower performance expectations |
Mental disability | Receives low employment ratings |
Tenure | Seniors may mock juniors’ idea |
Religion | Stereotyping a person based on his/her religion |
Sexual Orientation & Gender identity | By not having policies and procedures (like non-discrimination clauses, benefits) for protecting employees on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity |
We should not discriminate anyone based on biographical characteristics. But sometimes people encourage discrimination for affirmative actions. (Reservation & quotas for minority groups)
Increasing diversity
Management can increase diversity in their workplace by placing recruitment ads in publication geared towards specific demographic groups (e.g., Women magazine), selecting employees based on productive potential (bias-free), finding employees with similar personality traits for career advancement (e.g., Sales person – empathy, ego driven, risk taking and problem solving) and by partnering with associations (e.g., Graduate Minority Business Association)
Diversity management
Diversity management means the process and programs by which managers make everyone more aware of and sensitive to the needs and differences of others.
Organizations must implement a diversity management system. Managers must also be made accountable for achieving more demographically diverse management teams in the office. So that we could have a more inclusive environment.
Some people feel that diversity can cause communication barriers, too many opinions and conflicts.
But these drawbacks can be minimized by having an effective diversity management system.
We hope you guys have understood about diversity and discriminations in the organization.
Ok then before signing off
